Briefing
Reduce is a sustainable mobility application that addresses current environmental issues related to urban transportation. Our goal is to promote a shift towards more ecological and efficient mobility that benefits both the environment and the quality of life of urban citizens.
Key points to consider:
- Emission-free Transport: It is crucial that the application promotes emission-free vehicles, such as battery electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, to reduce environmental impact and improve air quality in our cities.
- Innovation as an Ally: Innovation will play a key role in achieving more sustainable mobility. Digitalization and the implementation of intelligent traffic management systems will optimize vehicle flow, reduce travel times, and decrease congestion on the streets.
Reduce is an intuitive and accessible application that fosters positive change in users' travel habits, promoting the adoption of more sustainable transportation options and contributing to the creation of healthier and more livable cities for all.
Problem Statement
95% of CO2 emissions in Spain are generated by road transport. There are many means of transportation, but not all are environmentally friendly. Currently, CO2 emissions into the atmosphere make transportation the most polluting sector. 80 million people per year move in Spain resulting in a high corresponding environmental impact.
Solution
Reduce was initiated as a final course project. It was developed as a cross-department effort: Data science, Full Stack Development, and Cyber Security had made their contributions alongside UX/UI. The final product aims to help passengers find the most ecological route to help reduce emissions and promote sustainable habits.
Design Process
Research
User persona
After learning about the pollution values generated by each mode of transportation, we compiled the data to create a user persona focused on eco-friendly transportation choices – all in our aim to promote sustainable travel habits.
Ideation
After defining the user persona in our briefing, we began innovating on the type of solution that environmentally conscious users needed. We started with a brainstorming session of ideas that would answer the following question:
How could we generate social impact to help make urban mobility more sustainable?
The data told us that users wanted a digital product that generates the most eco-friendly route to help reduce emissions and promote sustainable habits, as well as having a community of people who share the same values to work together on positive actions facing climate change.
Design & Prototype
We began sketching out the main sketches that would fulfill the objective of selecting the most eco-friendly route on public transportation.

We started off by assigning a name and a style to our product. The name 'Reduce' is based on the action of reducing the amount of carbon emissions per trip, thus generating more awareness.

Reflections
Reduce was a project that taught me to work as a team with other departments and to establish priorities regarding the core functionalities requested in the briefing.
Although it has been a pilot project to obtain my product designer certification, there are many improvements to implement, as well as enhancing the user journey when choosing a mode of transportation. These observations will be iterated upon in a subsequent phase.
- The application encourages users to choose less polluting transportation options by providing clear information about the most eco-friendly travel route. This helps reduce users' carbon footprint and promotes more sustainable mobility habits.
- By generating redeemable points at sustainable stores, the application motivates users to make conscious purchases and support businesses committed to environmentally responsible practices. This contributes to promoting a more sustainable lifestyle and green economy.
- The platform facilitates connections among environmentally conscious users, creating a community where they can share experiences, tips, and resources related to sustainability. This not only strengthens the sense of belonging but also fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange to drive positive actions for the environment.
